Will learning two languages confuse my child?

It is a fair question to sit with before signing up: can a child really learn a language through a screen, or is it a weaker version of a classroom? The research on how children actually acquire language gives a fairly clear answer, and it has less to do with the screen itself than with what happens during the lesson.
Why interaction matters more than exposure
For decades, the dominant theory in second language acquisition has been linguist Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis, the idea that learners acquire language most effectively when they receive input that is understandable but just slightly beyond their current level. Krashen's framework also includes what he called the affective filter, the idea that language does not stick when a learner feels anxious or on edge, which is part of why a relaxed, low-pressure class structure matters as much as the content itself.
Building on that, researcher Michael Long's Interaction Hypothesis argues that comprehension alone is not enough, learners need the chance to negotiate meaning through back-and-forth conversation, being asked something, attempting an answer, and getting a response. Experimental work testing this directly found that learners who could interact and negotiate meaning understood input better in the moment and retained more vocabulary and grammar afterwards than learners who received the same material with no chance to interact.
This is really the crux of the online learning question. A recorded video or an app gives a child input. A live class with a real teacher gives a child input plus interaction, and it is that second part the research points to as doing the heavier lifting.
What that means for group size
If interaction is what drives learning, class size becomes a practical, not just a comfort, issue. Guidance on running effective live online sessions consistently points to small groups, often cited around five learners, as the size that keeps every child getting genuine turns to speak, rather than mostly watching. A live class of twenty-five children functions, in practice, much closer to a recorded video for any individual child, since the odds of being personally drawn into conversation drop sharply as the group grows.
Consistency compounds
Separately, a large and consistent body of research on retrieval and spaced practice, most associated with cognitive psychologists Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, shows that actively recalling and using information at spaced intervals produces far stronger long-term retention than passive exposure alone. Applied to language classes, this is the case for a steady weekly rhythm over sporadic or binge-style sessions, the spacing itself is doing real cognitive work, not just building a habit.
